Aberdeen skipper Barry Robson has revealed why he changed captains following the retirement of Aberdeen team-mate Graeme Shinnie.

Captain Sinnie was substituted after only 56 minutes of play in Sunday's 0-0 stalemate against the Premier League's bottom club.

It was the first time in Sinnie's career at Pittodrie that he had been substituted before the hour mark.

The game against the Saints was also the sixth time Sinnie had been substituted in 216 appearances for Aberdeen.

Each of the previous substitutions had come late in the game, but Robson chose to replace Sinnie 11 minutes into the second half against Saints.

Robson said he made the difficult decision because the Scotland international was "tired" and looked "a bit leggy" after Thursday's Europa League match against HJK Helsinki.

Just three days before the match against St. Johnstone, Aberdeen played the Finnish champions to a 1-1 draw in Europa League Group G at the Pittodrie Stadium.
